Mike Scullen is one of the featured winter commuters.
After moving to Calgary seventeen years ago, Mike did not own a car. He survived getting around with transit but quickly realized that commuting by bicycle provided the most freedom and the least frustration.
Every year when the days became shorter he persisted with his bicycling habit a little longer into the winter. It wasn’t an instant revelation but he eventually became enthusiastically committed to this mode of transportation.
Over a decade of year-round bike commuting has presented him with some wintery challenges but the benefits far outweigh any inconvenience. Mike is proud of his whole family for their city utility cycling and enjoys chasing his kids around after a frosty ride threatening ice beard kisses. He currently enjoys a commute where he gets to check in with a family of muskrats and startles an occasional fox.
