Bicicles - The Documentary

Ellen Hadley | Winter Commuter

Ellen is one of our featured winter commuters and avid winter cyclist.

Ellen is a teacher who lives in Calgary with her awesome family (which will grow by two very soon). Although Ellen grew up in Calgary, she spent most of her adult life living in Toronto, Vancouver, Fernie, and China, before moving back to Calgary 5 years ago.

She loves the feeling of empowered through her strength and endurance: Ellen has gone on numerous self-supported bike trips (including Vancouver to Tijuana and across the USA), and more recently she has completed two Ironman triathlons.

Ellen first owned a car when she was 34 years old – before that she relied fully on biking and public transportation to get around. After moving back to Calgary as an adult, Ellen first tried winter bike commuting and was pleased to discover how much fun it is!

    • My trusty winter steed. Another cold and snowy #yycbike ride. My second so far this year. #iphonephotography #winter #2020 https://t.co/G5l0yUxgxH, Oct 24
    • Got the studs on my "winter" bike yesterday so I went for a ride today in the snow, cold and wind. A bit slippery in places but a good winter ride. There were a few of us that were out and about. https://t.co/9NBIImQC9l, Oct 21
    • Second winter bike ride of the season. This time with “real” winter conditions. Well, transitioning fall/winter conditions anyway. Roads were clear but the pathways were sketchy in a (very) few places. No need for studs just yet, but winter clothing is a must. https://t.co/bnXH6Pym4t, Oct 14
    • Hello #yycbike people. I haven’t posted in quite some time but since today was probably my first winter bike ride of the year, I thought I’d give a shoutout to all you fellow winter cyclists. Pedal on., Oct 12
    • That was pretty much the message we got from the Chinatown BDA when we interviewed them four years ago. Nothing’s changed. https://t.co/u4ZuqqC3RY, Aug 23
